Beginning Photography TIPS

(by Peter Bergdahl)

Taking great photographs often depends on practice and experimentation. If you are not satisfied with the results of your recent photographs there are some beginning photography tips that can you can use to quickly improve your photographs.

Beginning Photography Tips #1 - Fill the frame

One of the reasons that many people are not satisfied with their pictures is the fact that the subject is so distant within the frame of the photograph that is difficult to see them. In such cases, the subject is typically lost within the scene.

The following beginning photography tips will help you to fill the frame with your subject and create far more interest:

1. Use your optical zoom lens. This is a great way to achieve close-up shots.

2. Move closely in order to make sure you are positioned as effectively as possible to achieve a close-up shot.

Beginning Photography Tips #2 - The rule of thirds

The rule of thirds is one of the most important beginning photography tips you should be aware of in order to achieve good results. Some digital cameras today have the ability to place a 3x3 grid over the scene which can help this process. Even if your camera does not have the ability; however, you can image the grid, divided by width and length.

Your subject should ideally be placed on the intersection of two lines but this is in no way mandatory. There is nothing magic with the intersections and the most important thing with the rule of thirds is that it helps you avoid centering the subject in all your photographs. If you place the subject out of the center of the photograph, you will find that you can achieve more visual interest in your photographs.

Beginning Photography Tips #3 - Unclutter the scene

Another reason why some photographs do not tend to turn out well is that they are too cluttered. It can be difficult for the main subject to stand out in the photograph is the background and surroundings are too cluttered.

Try to choose settings where the background is simple and uncluttered. This will help your subject to stand out and prevent it from blending in with everything else in the background.

Beginning Photography Tips #4 - Fill flash

In some cases you may notice that there simply is not enough light from the existing light source. In this case you may need to supplement the light source. A solution to this problem is the fill flash. This is not a true flash as a flash would generally be used at night.

A fill flash works to provide supplementing lighting, or to fill in light in the part of the photograph where the shadows are too strong. This can make a dramatic and immediate difference in your photos.

A typical example is if you take a close-up photograph of a flower in very strong daylight and contrast. In this case you are likely to get fairly strong shadows in some parts of the flower. A fill flash can give these shadows a "kiss" of light to brighten them slightly.

Most cameras on the market today have a fill flash feature. You do not even need to use full manual mode in order to take advantage of the fill flash feature. The exact way in which you use the fill flash feature will depend on your camera model, so you should check your owner's manual.

Many cameras have a lightening bolt near the main button. By pressing this button you should be able to go through the different flash options.

Beginning Photography Tips #5 - Practice

Many people make the assumption that buying a lot of expensive equipment right away will automatically produce great photographs. While more advanced equipment can provide you with more options, it cannot take the place of practice and experience.

Even a point and shoot camera can be used to take great photos when you spend some time experimenting and practicing. The more time you spend taking pictures the more you will learn and the better photos you will be able to produce.

Digital SLR Buying Tips
web_gambar_slr.jpg

Digital SLRs (single lens reflex) operate much like film cameras.Unlike point-and-shoot digital cameras, what you see when you look through the viewfinder is what you'll shoot.

Users can change lenses, add accessories, control depth of field, apeature, shutter speed, ISO, and almost every other setting. They are sold in kits that include body, lens (usually 18-35mm), battery, charger and software, or the body alone.

These are the things you need to consider before buying a digital SLR's:

  • Fast Image Processor: If you plan on taking sports or action shots, look for a fast image processor.

  • Size and Weight: These cameras are large by nature; you won't find a compact model. Make sure you're comfortable with the size and weight of yours, and that you like how it fits in your hands and where the controls are located.

  • Lenses: Before you buy lenses, or if you already have some you're planning to use, double-check that they're compatible. Depending whether the auto-focus motor is in the lense or the body, some lenses might not work

  • Used or New? If the pricepoint is the only thing preventing you from purcahsing a DSLR, look for used models.

  • Memory: What kind kind of memory does a camera use? SD or xD? Up to what size can it handle? If you already have products that use memory cards at home, it will save you money to get a model that uses the same kind.

  • Battery: Do you want to power your camera with a battery pack that needs charging or batteries that need changing? Some cameras offer both if you can't decide. Remember that you can buy rechargable batteries, too.

  • Megapixels: Don't buy a camera solely for megapixels. You can get 11x14 prints from 6 MP. For most users, that's more than enough.

Laptop Buying Guide - All Purpose Notebook

web_laptop.jpg Looking for the perfect notebook PC to suit your needs? Here you’ll find tips, advice, and all the information you need to make the smartest buying decision. All purpose notebooks deliver what most buyers are looking for in a portable: a screen that's not too small or too big, a CPU that's powerful but that doesn't kill battery life, a chassis that's easy to carry but that doesn't make you forego a comfortable keyboard and on-board optical drive. In short, an all-purpose laptop is just right.

What Are All-Purpose Notebooks?

All-purpose notebooks represent the sweet spot for the industry. This category comprises thin-and-light models with 13.3-inch or 14-inch screens, as well as the typical mainstream portable with a screen up to 15.4 inches in size.

Who Are They For?

Essentially, if a machine isn't intended for a niche buyer — someone looking for a tablet, an ultraportable, a desktop replacement, a budget model, and so on — it's an all-purpose laptop. You'll find models tailored for business users, home PC buyers, students, and multimedia enthusiasts.

What Can You Expect From All-Purpose Notebooks?

  • 1.8-GHz to 2.4-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
  • 2GB RAM
  • Sharp, bright widescreen
  • 160GB to 320GB hard drive
  • DL DVD burner

Simple Buying Tips

  • Focus on the screen. Opt for as large a screen as you care to carry, since more screen real-estate will make working on your laptop more enjoyable. Road warriors may want to opt for a sub-4-pound machine with a 13.3-inch panel, but if the machine won't travel often, certainly step up to a heavier laptop (4.5 to 6.5 pounds or so) with a 14.1- or 15.4-inch LCD.
  • Think more power. Since a rock-bottom price is not the goal, insist on a model with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor in the 1.8- to 2.4-GHz range. This will give you plenty of power (especially when multitasking), while keeping an eye on battery life. And as the saying goes, you can never be too rich or have too much RAM, so opt for 2GB.
  • Get a versatile optical drive. In this class, be sure to upgrade to a multi-format dual-layer DVD burner. The 9.5GB capacity will come in handy for backing up your music and photo collections and other important files.
  • Choose a premium OS. Steer clear of machines that only offer Vista Basic in favor of Vista Home Premium or Vista Business; many business buyers will want to stick with a model that still offers the leaner (and familiar) Windows XP. And don't forget about a Mac. The latest OS X (Leopard) is arguably the best mainstream operating system available.
  • Watch the support. Make sure you are getting at least a one-year warranty, with phone/chat tech support hours that you can live with. 24/7 availability is ideal, but insist on tech support that at least coincides with your time zone's daytime hours.
